Women’s History Month: Leadership That Shapes Communities

I am pleased to spotlight this month a remarkable woman who has taken on the role of Mayor of Wyandotte County, Kansas City, Kansas. For the first time in history, Wyandotte County is led by an African American woman as mayor. Her uniqueness isn't defined by her skin color, but rather by her exceptional leadership qualities that enable her to stand out in a society where practical approaches for community improvement are often lacking.

I have identified an article that I believe shares the qualities of strong leadership that our mayor brings to the community.

An August 29, 2025 article from LegalClarity.org highlights core qualities of strong leaders.

  1. The mayor acts as the city’s chief executive, overseeing daily operations, making decisions that impact public safety, transportation, and economic growth. Duties can vary according to local government structures.

  2. Effective mayors demonstrate integrity, vision, decisiveness, empathy, and resilience. These traits build trust, inspire collective action, support timely choices, address diverse community needs, and help overcome challenges.

  3. Mayors manage city functions, collaborate with councils on laws and budgets, ensure responsible spending, oversee departments, and direct policy implementation, sometimes in partnership with a city manager.

Did you know that many of the large cities in the USA are lead by mayors who are women?

January 2024: Of the 125 American cities with more than 200,000 residents, 45 (36%) are governed by women mayors. Cities with female leaders include Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington DC, Philadelphia and Boston. Of the 45 cities, only ten have Republican mayors. Some 31 cities are led by Democrats, while four mayors are independents

Acquanetta Warren of Fontana (CA), who assumed office in 2010, is the longest-serving female mayor among cities with more than 200,000 people. Carolyn Goodman, Mayor of Las Vegas, followed her husband as mayor in 2011, while Nancy Vaughn became Mayor of Greensboro (NC) in 2013. Hillary Schieve, Reno (NV), joined the list one year later. Women mayors who took office in January 2024 include Cherelle Parker, Philadelphia (PA) and Connie Boesen, Des Moines (IA).

Mayor Gender and Race Statistics in the United States (2025)

  • Male , 64.7%

  • Female , 35.3%

Ethnic and Racial Representation Among Mayors

The majority of mayors in the United States are White, making up 76.2% of all mayoral positions. Hispanic or Latino and Asian mayors each represent just under 8%, while other groups are represented in much smaller proportions.

  • White , 76.2%

  • Hispanic or Latino , 7.8%

  • Asian , 7.7%

  • Unknown , 3.9%

  • Black or African American , 3.8%

  • American Indian and Alaska Native , 0.6%
